The Music Man - Synopsis

There’s trouble in River City! When smooth-talking con man Harold Hill arrives in a small, tight-knit town in Iowa, he expects to dupe its residents with his elaborate moneymaking scheme: Despite his complete lack of musical literacy, he will convince everyone that he is a brilliant bandleader and recruit all the boys in town to form a band, pocketing the cash for instruments and uniforms. The problem? Some of the town members, especially the stern librarian, Marian Paroo, don’t quite buy Harold’s story.

As Harold struggles to keep his scheme afloat, he also finds himself increasingly attached to the townspeople, who have all experienced a positive change since Harold came to town. Complicating matters even more, Harold is also falling head-over-heels for the beautiful Marian. As All-American as apple pie and as charming as can be.

We will be staging The Music Man on 29th & 30th of November & 1st December 2018

Prof. Harold Hill (The Music Man)

A smooth talking con man and traveling salesman with plenty of charm, comes to River City, Iowa, and creates a hysteria about the "trouble" of the new pool table in town in order to sell band instruments and uniforms. His main ambition, besides fleecing the good citizens of their cash, becomes trying to win over the local librarian, with whom he eventually falls in love.

Audition Song(s): "Seventy-Six Trombones" - Audition Song 1 & "The Sadder But Wiser Girl For Me" - Audition Song 2

Marian Paroo

A sometimes stuffy librarian and piano teacher, Marian sees through Harold's charade and sets out to expose him as a fraud, but inevitably falls for him.

Audition Song(s): "Goodnight My Someone" - Audition Song 3 & "Till There Was You" - Audition Song 4

Mrs. Paroo

Charlie Cowell

A relaxed/sensory friendly performance is for everyone, providing a welcoming and inclusive environment which can be enjoyed by all. During this performance, there will be a laid-back approach to noise and movement coming from the audience, permitting and encouraging everyone to relax and be completely themselves while enjoying ‘All Shook Up’.

The show’s lighting and sound will be adjusted to reduce sensory stimuli and the lights in the auditorium will be kept on at a low level throughout the performance to create a comfortable, safe and welcoming environment.

There will also be a ‘chill-out’ area where people can go if they find they need some quiet time away from the auditorium.

Inspired by and featuring the songs of Elvis Presley, ‘All Shook Up’ follows a small Midwestern US town that is thrown into a frenzy with the arrival of Chad, a good-looking, motorcycle-riding roustabout, who rides from town to town, guitar on his back, blue suede shoes on his feet, and a song in his heart!

Repressed by their conservative mayor, the town begins to come alive once more under Chad’s influence. Lovers meet, woo, pursue, and more, all in one zany night that will change the town forever. ‘All Shook Up’ is a rocking, heartwarming tale about following dreams, love, and the power of music. This hip-swivelling, lip-curling musical fantasy will have you jumpin’ out of your blue suede shoes with such classics as 'Heartbreak Hotel', 'Hound Dog', 'Jailhouse Rock', and 'Don’t Be Cruel'.

Staged by Castlebar Musical and Dramatic Society, the cast and crew are so excited to be back, after their sellout show 'Annie'.
